Illuminata Parade of Hope
Portland, Oregon -- September 22, 2001
The recent tragedies in America have deeply affected all of us. Our hearts go out to the families of the victims and their loved ones.
As a remembrance of that terrible day, Portland, Oregon held the first Illuminata Parade of Hope. Ten CAP members joined with about 15,000 other Portlanders to walk down the new Eastside Esplanade, over the Morrison Bridge, down Waterfront Park to the Hawthorne Bridge, and then back to the starting point.A distance of about two miles in total.
The goal of the organizers was to have a circle of candlelight around that whole area, which, indeed happened.
There was entertainment all day long, and Tears of Joy Theatre had an information booth set up along with lots of other arts and culture groups.
It was one of the first scheduled public gatherings to be held in Portland since the tragedies of September 11th.
Several CAP members took puppets along the route: President Steven Overton had Smokey Re, the rabbit, Candace Dobson had her giant Ostrich, and Marty Richmond had one of Esther Heydt's puppets, Uncle Sam, (who was carrying a sign that read: "We will smile again"). Other CAP members carried lights and some of Tears of Joy's puppets.
The weather was perfect, and all in all, it was a nice evening, -- it was good to see people beginning to start their lives over again.
